Interfaith Homelessness Network – April Showers

The Interfaith Homelessness Network of San Leandro was formed to increase public awareness, advocate for, and to provide services to the homeless through its program, April Showers.

April Showers began as a response from the faith community to the death of a decorated Vietnam veteran and homeless man, Clement McMenemy on the streets of San Leandro. From this tragedy came something possible and positive, a unique day program that’s been serving homeless men and women in our community since 2002.

Our first event at the Boys and Girls Club in San Leandro served about 8 guests and offered a place to shower and a bag lunch. Now, 23 years later, we are still an all-volunteer organization, with several churches and groups working together every month. April Showers is made possible by the efforts of these volunteers who provide supervision, food, supplies, clothing and donate supplies and money to the program. We receive no government funding.

Besides the bag lunches and showers initially offered, we now serve a hot lunch, coffee and pastries, offer donated clothing and shoes, haircuts, and resource and social services referrals, and typically serve between 50 and 75 guests. We also host a Thanksgiving lunch for homeless and seniors.
